Kvitova Rallies Past Barty to Claim Sydney for 26th WTA Tour Title
(January 12, 2019) Petra Kvitova enters this year’s first major of the year, the Australian Open, with a Sydney International title in hand.
The two-time Wimbledon champion beat home favorite Ashleigh Barty 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(3) rallying from 0-3 down in the third set to win her second Sydney International title on Saturday. It’s her 26th title on the WTA Tour.
“Ash, I know it’s a tough one. For sure, it’s hurting not to win at home,” Kvitova said in an apology on the court to the Australian crowd after the match. “One day you’re going to make it for sure, so good luck in the Aussie Open and well done this week.”
Barty defeated three seed en route to the final – No. 1 Simona Halep, No.9 Kiki Bertens and No.12 Elise Mertens.
Kvitova, who is the 8th seed, will face Magdalena Rybarikova on Monday in the first round of the Australian Open.
