TOP SEEDS ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINALS OF PACIFIC COAST MEN’S
DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP AT LA JOLLA BEACH & TENNIS CLUB
Saturday’s Main Draw Quarterfinal Matches to begin at 1:30 p.m. (PST)
LA JOLLA, Calif. – (March 1, 2019) – An amazing day of tournament action came to close as the first four rounds of tournament action at the 130th annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship were completed at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
Friday’s schedule was to feature the first three rounds of competition, however due to inclement weather in the forecast, tournament officials decided to play the eight Round of 16 matches this evening instead of Saturday morning.
“We thought it would be best if we changed the schedule to accommodate the players in case there is rain on Saturday,” said Tournament Director Bill Kellogg. “We are still hoping to play quarterfinal matches on Saturday afternoon, weather permitting.”
The co-No. 1 seeded team of Brandon Holt and Reily Smith of USC moved into the quarterfinals. Earlier in the day, Holt and Smith got past a tough challenge in their third-round match as they fought past the unseeded team of Tom Carney and Lucas Andersen of Ball State University 8-6.
Later in the evening, Holt and Smith cruised past ninth-seeded Jack Molloy and Mert Zincirli of Cal Berkeley 8-2, to set up a quarterfinal clash on Saturday against the fourth-seeded independent team from Northern California, Tyler Browne and Nicholas Brunner.
Following their third-round victory, Holt and Smith spoke about how special it was to play in the tournament and enjoy spending time in La Jolla.
“We’re in the middle of the season and this is a moment that we’re all looking forward to – coming to play in La Jolla. It’s not so much about the results, but a chance to spend time with family and the team,” Holt said. “The expectation is to win, but that is secondary to having fun in La Jolla and how lucky we are to be here.”
Smith said, “Anytime you’re in La Jolla, it’s amazing. It’s great being here with the team and my family. It’s a nice time to chill a little bit. It’s a good time to regroup and enjoy the beach, play some doubles and have a lot of fun.”
Also advancing to Saturday’s quarterfinals was the second-seeded team of Jacob Brumm and Yuta Kikuchi of Cal Berkeley. They eliminated ninth-seeded Ben Goldberg and Connor Rapp of UCLA 8-4 in fourth-round action.
Saturday’s main draw quarterfinal matches are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. (PST).
