(March 17, 2019) Talk about a good use of a wild card at the BNP Paribas Open. Canadian wild card Bianca Andreescu won a battle with former No. 1 and three-time major champion, German veteran Angelique Kerber, the No. 8 seed 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in an almost two-hour and twenty-minute match.

This was the 18-year-old’s first Indian Wells tournament, making her debut in the main draw of a WTA Tour Premier Mandatory event. Coming into the tournament, the Canadian was ranked 60th, she’ll rise to No. 24 on Monday.

The Canadian born in Romania, is just the fourth woman to win the Indian Wells title unseeded, and also as their first WTA title. She joins last year’s champion Naomi Osaka as well as former champions Serena Williams in 1999 and Kim Clijsters in in 2005 in the club.
