Fabio Fognini defeated Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday to cap a dream week at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters with his first ATP Masters 1000 title.
The 13th seed converted four of five break points to become the lowest-seeded player to lift the trophy since 13th seed Gustavo Kuerten’s title run in 1999. Fognini will rise to a career-high No. 12 when the newest ATP Rankings are published on Monday.
“I knew it was going to be tough, a lot of running,” said Fognini. “[It’s an] incredible achievement. I’m really, really happy.”
