Kontaveit Reaches Stuttgart Final Versus Kvitova as Osaka Withdraws with Ab Injury

 

(April 27, 2019) No. 1 Naomi Osaka pulled out of the  Porsche Grand Prix tennis semifinal against Anett Kontaveit citing an abdominal strain. The Japanese player said that she began to feel the injury before her quarterfinal match on Friday. The Australian Open champion rallied from 1-5 down in the third set to beat Donna Vekic.

“I wanted to wait to see if I could play. I woke up today and I had to roll out of bed, then I decided I wasn’t able to play,” Osaka said during her news conference.

The No. 8 seed Kontaveit, also received a walkover into the quarterfinals when Victoria Azarenka retired injured in their third set.

Kontaviet will play Petra Kvitova in the final.  The Czech,who will be playing inn herfourth final this year, beat Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-1.
