
“Greece” is the Word as Sakkari and Tsitsipas Win Tennis Titles over the Weekend
(May 5, 2019) Greece had two winners this past weekend on the tennis courts. Maria Sakkari earned her first trophy on the WTA Tour by rallying form a set and a break down to topple seventh seed Johanna Konta of Great Britain 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 for the Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem title in Rabat, Morroco. The sixth seeded Greek beat three seeded players on the way to the final.

Sakkari’s countryman Stefanos Tsitsipas won his first main tour tournament on clay by taking the Estoril Open title over Lucky Loser, Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 6-3, 7-6. For the top seed Tsitsipas, this was his third ATP Tour title. He previously triumphed in two indoor events – the Open 13 Provence in Marseille, and last October at the Intrum Stockholm Open.
In other tournament results, Chilean Cristian Garin won his second ATP Tour title on Sunday, defeating Italian Matteo Berrettini 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(1) to win at the BMW Open by FWU in Munich. Garin came into the year with just one match win on the ATP Tour, he is now tied for the most tour-level clay wins with 19.
At the Prague Open, qualifier Jil Teichmann of Switzerland beat wildcard Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4. This is the first title for the Swiss woman in her very first final.
