(May 13, 2019) American tennis player Nicole Gibbs announced on Twitter on Monday that she will miss the remainder of the clay court season as she has been diagnosed with salivary gland cancer.
Her surgery is scheduled for Friday and she hope to return to tennis in time for Wimbledon qualifying in late June.
The 26-year-old Ohio native tweeted that a growth at the roof of mouth was discovered at the dentist and her surgeon is confident that surgery will be “sufficient treatment.”
Gibbs, former NCAA singles and team champion at Stanford is currently ranked at 116th in the WTA rankings. Her career high on No. 68 came in 2016.
