Djokovic and Thiem to Meet in Roland Garros Semifinal
(June 6, 2019) For the first time at a major since the 2013 Australian Open, the top 4 men’s seeds have reached the semifinals of a major. No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 4 Dominic Thiem won their quarterfinal matches in straight sets on Thursday at Roland Garros, matches which were washed out on Wednesday in Paris.
Djokovic extended his win streak to 26 matches at major tournaments and stands just two wins from a second “Nole” slam, beating No. 5 Alexander Zverev 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.
Thiem, last year’s finalist dominated No. 10 seed Karen Khachanov 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
“I’m now in the semifinals for the fourth time,” said the Austrian Thiem. “It’s incredibly difficult to win a Grand Slam, especially for us players who haven’t won one yet, because if everything goes quite normal, we have to beat two players with 15 or more Grand Slam [tournament titles].
Thiem is 2-6 against Djokovic. He and the 14-time major winner have split matches at the French Open – Djokovic beat Thiem in the2016 semifinals and Thiem returned the favor in the quarterfinals in 2017.
Djokovic recently defeated Thiem in the semifinals of the Madrid Open.
Friday’s schedule will feature both men’s semifinals being played back to back on center court – Chatrier with separate tickets for each match.
