WORLD NO. 1 AND DEFENDING US OPEN CHAMPION NOVAK DJOKOVIC JOINED BY FELLOW PAST US OPEN CHAMPIONS RAFAEL NADAL AND ROGER FEDERER IN 2019 US OPEN MEN’S SINGLES FIELD

Field Features the World’s Top 98 Men

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., July 17, 2019 – The USTA today announced that six previous US Open champions, led by defending champion and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic (SRB), will headline the men’s singles field for the 2019 US Open Tennis Championships. The field includes three-time US Open champion and world No. 2 Rafael Nadal (ESP) and five-time US Open champion and world No. 3 Roger Federer (SUI), as well as 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic (CRO) and 2016 US Open champion Stan Wawrinka (SUI). Juan Martin del Potro (ARG), the 2009 US Open champion, has earned direct entry into the field but recently underwent surgery for a serious knee injury.

Rounding out the top 10 entries are: No. 4 Dominic Thiem (AUT); No. 5 Alexander Zverev (GER); No. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE); No. 7 Kei Nishikori (JPN); No. 8 Karen Khachanov (RUS); No. 9 Fabio Fognini (ITA); and No. 10 Daniil Medvedev (RUS).

The 2019 US Open main draw will be played Monday, August 26, through Sunday, September 8, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The US Open Men’s Singles Championship is presented by Chase.

Each of the world’s top 98 men received direct entry into the US Open, representing 38 countries. The United States has nine men who qualified for direct entry into the US Open’s main draw.

Marcel Granollers (ESP), ranked No. 98, is the last man to receive direct entry into the field of 128. Six players used a protected ranking to gain entry, including No. 57 Tomas Berdych (CZE), No. 73 Vasek Pospisil (CAN), No. 85 Jozef Kovalik (SVK), No. 88 Janko Tipsavrevic (SRB), No. 90 Steve Darcis (BEL), and No. 95 Cedrik-Marcel Stebe (GER). Sixteen more players will gain entry through the US Open Qualifying Tournament, which is the centerpiece of US Open Fan Week, August 19-24, while the remaining eight spots are wild cards awarded by the USTA.

The nine Americans who received direct entry into this year’s tournament include: No. 15 John Isner, of Greensboro, N.C., No. 30 Taylor Fritz, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., No. 39 Sam Querrey, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., No. 41 Frances Tiafoe, of Orlando, Fla., No. 57 Reilly Opelka, of West Palm Beach, Fla., No. 68 Steve Johnson, of Orange, Calif., No. 72 Tennys Sandgren, of Gallatin, Tenn., No. 84 Bradley Klahn, of Los Angeles, and No. 96 Mackenzie McDonald, of Orlando, Fla.

The July 15 edition of the ATP rankings was used to determine the US Open main draw entry list. Seeds will be determined and announced closer to the start of the event.

The 2019 US Open will mark the culmination of the US Open Series, the North American summer season of seven ATP World Tour and WTA events that begins next week in Atlanta.
