Singles Qualifying Play Starts Saturday

ATLANTA, July 18, 2019 –  Trent Bryde is becoming a veteran when it comes to playing in his hometown ATP World Tour event.

Bryde defeated fellow Bulldog, Emil Reinberg, 6-3 6-3, to win a spot in the 2019 BB&T Atlanta Open presented by First Data singles qualifying draw. 

This will be Bryde’s third appearance in the Atlanta event.

Bryde drew first blood as he broke Reinberg’s first serving game of the match to take the 2-0 lead. From then on, the two teammates traded breaks, but it was Bryde who held his serve first to get a 4-1 lead in the first. Reinberg held his serve comfortably and received an opportunity to climb back the scoreboard with Bryde serving at 4-2. On breakpoint, Bryde hit a forehand a bit wide and Reinberg got back on serve at 3-4. Bryde showed mental toughness and fought off two game points to break Reinberg and grab a 5-3 lead. The 19-year old Bryde seized his first opportunity with an ace at 40-love and took the first set 6-3.

The second set saw a number of very hard fought long games. Both players had chances in the third game to either break or hold. Bryde was a bit more aggressive on second serve returns, taking the ball on the rise and coming to net, taking time away from his opponent. This strategy paid dividends as Bryde broke his opponent and took the 2-1 lead. Reinberg fought back by hitting some big returns on both sides to give himself triple break point. Bryde came up with big shots of his own to erase those and even the game out at deuce. After a lot of back and forth, Reinberg’s big returns had the final answer, as he hit a forehand return down at Bryde’s feet who came in after his serve. With the set evened out at two all, the fifth game also had a lot of back and forth. Bryde’s aggressive returns however, were efficient once again and helped him take the 3-2 lead after breaking his opponent in what was the turning point of the match. At 4-3, Bryde had to fight off two break points to hold onto his lead and go up 5-3. He needed two match points to seal the match in straight sets, 6-3 6-3, as Reinberg missed a volley into the net on the last point of the match.

Reinberg is no stranger to the BB&T Atlanta Open presented by First Data. He defeated Felix Corwin 6-2 7-5, to reach the Wildcard Playoffs semifinals. This Georgia Bulldog was the College Night player pick for the 2018 BB&T Atlanta Open and played in the singles main draw. Reinberg was named First-Team All-SEC for second time in four seasons in 2019. He also received an at-large bid to 2019 singles championships. He finished his senior season ranked No. 38 in ITA singles, also ranked No. 61 in ITA doubles rankings with Walker Duncan. He totaled eight victories against nationally-ranked opponents. In 2017, he received main draw doubles wildcard to the 2017 BB&T Atlanta Open in July after reaching the singles semifinals of back-to-back International Tennis Federation Circuit events in Tulsa and Wichita.

Bryde also is familiar with the BB&T Atlanta Open presented by First Data. He’s tasted success playing in his hometown ATP World Tour event before. In 2015, he won the Wildcard Challenge, and then defeated a former ATP touring pro in the first round of qualifying. The rising sophomore at the University of Georgia recorded eight wins in both singles and doubles to cap his first year as a Bulldog. He was ranked fourth nationally, and first in the state of Georgia as a junior while achieving a career-high No.8 ranking in the International Tennis Federation Junior World rankings. During his successful career, he competed in all four junior Grand Slams around the world, and was invited to participate in the prestigious ITF Junior Masters Event in Chengdu, China.

Tournament Director, Eddie Gonzalez loves to call the BB&T Atlanta Open a “Mini U.S. Open” and that again is evident in 2019, when Venus WIlliams, winner of seven Grand Slam singles titles takes on former US Open finalist, Madison Keys in a special ‘Sunday Showdown” on July 21. That is the first evening session. Qualifying matches will be played during the day on Saturday and Sunday.
