SPECIAL EVENTS HIGHLIGHT WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN

More Than Matches On Tap With Activities Planned All Tournament

CINCINNATI (July 30, 2019) – A number of special events are planned while world class tennis takes place at the Western & Southern Open. The tournament will be held August 10-18 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.

The activities include interactive opportunities for youth to get on a court as well as events to celebrate community members who serve others.

These events kick off before the tournament even starts with the Play Tennis Cincinnati clinics that will be held Aug. 5-8. Nearly 300 Cincinnati children have registered to take part in these four-day clinics to learn the game from area instructors. These clinics, which are at capacity, will be just the start, as these same youth will be invited to enjoy further instruction this fall at facilities around Cincinnati.

On the eve of the tournament, Aug. 9, the Porsche Draw Ceremony will be held to determine the matchups for the tournament. The invite-only reception and dinner will see fans given the opportunity to help create the draw and determine the path to the title for the eventual champion.

First Watch Opening Weekend ushers in the first play of the tournament while also providing two opportunities for younger players to take part in tennis instruction and have an opportunity to meet ATP Tour and WTA stars. The first event is the morning of Saturday, Aug. 10 with Kids Day presented by First Watch and powered by Net Generation. Older players may participate in Sunday’s High School Day presented by First Watch. Opening Weekend also features the two-round qualifying tournament while fans will also be able to watch the practice sessions of main draw players. The weekend wraps up late Sunday with the first night session of the week, which will feature main draw matches. All activities are included with the purchase of tickets, which are on sale now at wsopen.com.

The Western & Southern Open will honor the armed forces with Military Appreciation Day presented by Electric Events on Monday, Aug. 12. Active and retired military personnel are able to purchase half price tickets with a valid ID at the W&S Open box office. The military members in attendance will be recognized during the night session.

Later in the week, the Western & Southern Open will honor the civic personnel in our community with First Responders Night presented by UC Health on Saturday, Aug. 17. Members of police, fire and rescue have the opportunity to purchase discounted tickets with a valid ID at the W&S Open box office. The first responders in attendance will be recognized during the night session.

Players of all ages will take part in the Buddy Up Tennis Team Challenge Cup on Sunday, Aug. 18. This adaptive tennis competition for children and adults with Down Syndrome will feature drills, games, match play and character development. All spectators are welcome to cheer on participants during this event on Courts 5, 6 and 7.

On the court, main draw play begins Sunday. The opening two rounds will continue Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The provisional schedule calls for the entire Round of 16 in singles to take place on Thursday, Aug. 15, followed by all singles quarterfinals on Friday, Aug. 16. Two separate sessions are scheduled for each weekday – a day session beginning at 11 am and night session which will start at 7 pm.

The singles semifinals will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17. The day session gets underway at 11 am and will feature both women’s semifinals as well as one men’s semifinal. The Saturday night session will include the second men’s singles semifinal along with the women’s doubles final. Championship Sunday, Aug. 18, features the singles finals from 2 pm, with the women playing first, followed by the men. The men’s doubles final will also be held Sunday, and will take place at 12:15 pm on the Grandstand.

In 2018, the Western & Southern Open attracted more than 194,000 spectators. The reigning singles champions are ATP No. 1 Novak Djokovic and WTA No. 5 Kiki Bertens. In addition to world class tennis, the W&S Open features more than 50 musical acts, 20 food vendors, six signature bar areas and a retail plaza for patrons to enjoy between matches.

The Western & Southern Open, a WTA Premier 5 and ATP Masters 1000 tournament, is part of the US Open Series. Started in 1899, the tournament annually supports a number of Cincinnati area charities.
