TOP SINGLES SEEDS DOMINATE MONDAY’S ACTION AT USTA
BILLIE JEAN KING GIRLS’ 16s & 18s NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Tuesday’s Matches Slated to Begin at 8 a.m. (PDT) at Barnes Tennis Center
SAN DIEGO – (August 5, 2019) – Playing with confidence and determination, the top seeds dominated Monday’s action at the Barnes Tennis Center and easily advanced to the next round of the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 16s & 18s National Championships.
Top-seeded Hailey Baptiste, playing her first match in the Girls’ 18s draw after a first-round bye, needed only 68 minutes to dispatch Kianna Oda of Hilo, Hawaii, 6-1, 6-1 to reach the third round. Second-seeded Katie Volynets of Walnut Creek, Calif., was equally impressive in her second-round match as she defeated Jamie Kim of Mason, Ohio 6-1, 6-0 in 66 minutes.
Third-seeded Emma Navarro of Charleston, S.C., and fourth-seeded Alexa Noel of Summit, N.J., also advanced to the Girls’ 18s third round. Navarro eased past Isabelle Lee of Oneida, Wis., 6-2, 6-0, while Noel overcame Monica Stratakos of Saratoga, Calif., 6-0, 6-3.
“It felt pretty good. I was happy to come out and get a win,” Baptiste said. “I really don’t set any expectations for myself, I just to go out and compete my hardest and play my game.”
Last week, Baptiste upset 2017 US Open finalist Madison Keys in the first round of the WTA event in Washington, D.C. When asked about her stunning performance prior to coming to San Diego, she said, “It gave me a lot of confidence. It showed I can play with the top players in the world. I’m really confident coming into this week.”
In the Girls’ 16s singles draw, top-seeded Valencia Xu of Livingston, N.J., and second-seeded Vivian Ovrootsky of San Jose, Calif., moved into the fourth round with impressive straight-set victories. Xu eliminated 33rd seed Sanjana Tallamraju of Munster, Ind., 6-0, 6-2 and Ovrootsky dismissed unseeded Parvathi Shanker of Napa, Calif., 6-0, 6-1.
Local players also made a strong showing on Monday as San Diegans Haley Giavara and Amy Huang along with Elizabeth Goldsmith of Chula Vista, Calif., moved into the third round in the Girls’ 18s singles draw. Midori Castillo of Bonita, Calif., and San Diego’s Katherine Hui also advanced to the fourth round in the Girls’ 16s singles division.

Over 400 of the top junior tennis players in the country, aged 16 and 18 and under, are competing for the title of National Champion, as well as a wild card entry into the Women’s Singles main draw of the 2019 US Open (for the 18s Champion) and a wild card into the 2019 US Open Junior Championships (for the 16s Champion). The 18s Doubles Champions will also receive a wild card into the US Open Women’s Doubles main draw.
The Girls’ 16s event will conclude with singles and doubles finals on Saturday August 10. The Girls’ 18s tournament will get underway on Sunday, August 4 and conclude with the 18s singles championship on Sunday, August 11. Both divisions feature 256-player singles draws with the top 32 players receiving a first-round bye. There IS also be 128-team doubles draws with the top 16 teams getting first-round byes.
The starting times for each day of the tournament are as follows: Tuesday, August 6 and Wednesday, August 7 – 8 a.m.
Thursday, August 8 – 8:30 a.m.
Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10 – 9 a.m.
Sunday, August 11 – 10 a.m.

Early-round tournament matches are also being played at San Diego State University’s Aztec Tennis Center, 5375 Remington Rd., San Diego, CA, 92115 through Tuesday, August 6 and at the Balboa Tennis Club, 2221 Morley Field Drive, San Diego, CA 92104 through Wednesday, August 7.
Admission and on-site parking at the Barnes Tennis Center is free each day of the tournament. For fans watching matches at SDSU and the Balboa Tennis Club, admission is free. There is a nominal charge for on-campus parking at SDSU. Parking regulations at the university will be strictly enforced. Parking is free at the Balboa Tennis Club.
Tennis Channel will broadcast the Girls’ 16s singles final from 1-3 p.m. (PDT) on Saturday, August 10 and the Girls’ 18s singles final from 2-4 p.m. (PDT) on Sunday, August 11.
All tournament matches played on Stadium Court at the Barnes Tennis Center are being streamed live at www.ustagirlsnationals.com through Friday, August 9.
