(October 13, 2019) ATP Tour – Daniil Medvedev claimed his second ATP Masters 1000 trophy on Sunday, defeating reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-1 to triumph at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
It was the Russian’s first victory in five ATP Head2Head encounters against the German. The World No. 4, who has reached the championship match in each of his six most recent events, owns an ATP Tour-leading 46 hard-court wins and 22 Masters 1000 victories this year. He earned his first crown at this level in Cincinnati.
“This one is also amazing because Shanghai I think is one of the most prestigious Masters [1000 tournaments] on the Tour,” Medvedev said. “Especially in the past 10 years, there were only three players who managed to win this one, so it’s really special to have my photo in the corridor over the next many years.”
Medvedev now stands at No. 3 in the Race to London and the ATP world Tour Finals.
