Oracle Challenger Series Houston – Friday Results
(November 15, 2019) The Oracle Challenger Series Houston is being held at the George R. Brown Tennis Center at Rice University from November 10-17.
On a sunny and mild Friday that featured both singles third round and quarterfinal play due to Thursday’s inclement weather, wild card CoCo Vandeweghe led the way for the Americans, convincingly defeating Anhelina Kalinina 6-3, 6-3 and then dispatching Mandy Minella 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. She will take on No. 7 seed Stefanie Voegele, who took down American Usue Arconada 6-1, 6-2 and then emerged victorious from a hard-fought 7-5, 6-1 victory over No. 4 seed Katarina Zavatska. The other women’s semifinal will pit No. 3 seed Kirsten Flipkens against American Irina Falconi, two players who have been playing nearly flawless tennis this week in Houston.
On the men’s side, two Americans – No. 4 seed Marcos Giron and No. 8 Mitchell Krueger – will compete for a spot in Sunday’s final. Giron battled through both of his matches on Friday, needing three sets to defeat Jenson Brooksby 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the third round, as well as Jason Jung in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. Meanwhile, his opponent Krueger captured straight set victories over Pedja Krstin 7-6(4), 6-4 and fellow American Michael Redlicki 6-4, 6-4. The second semifinal will feature 40-year-old veteran and all-time ATP Tour ace leader Ivo Karlovic against Australian Christopher O’Connell, who advanced to the semifinals when American Michael Mmoh retired from their quarterfinal match after only five games.
