(February 1, 2020)Twenty-one-year-old Sofia Kenin of the United States defeated Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to win the Australian Open for her first major title.
The 14th seed rallied for the win over the two-time major winner and former No. 1 under a closed roof in Rod Laver Arena.
The Floridian reached her first major final by beating world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty.
The pivotal part of the match came at 2-2 in the third set- Kenin was down 0-40 on her serve and won five straight points to hold, all on winners. She was five for six on break point opportunities.
"I would like to thank the crowd. These past two weeks have been the best two weeks of my life. I love you guys from the bottom of my heart."

“This is my first speech but I’m going to try my best,” said Kenin in her acceptance speech during the trophy ceremony.
“First off I want to congratulate Garbine on a great match and a great tournament. I’m sure we’re going to have many more finals.
“My dream officially came true, I cannot even describe this feeling. It’s so emotional. I’ve worked so hard. If you have a dream, go for it, it’s going to come true.
“Last but not least I want to thank my team, my dad. I can’t believe we’re here today. I’m so grateful for this.”
With the win, Kenin will reach the Top Ten for the first time rising to No. 7 in the world becoming the highest ranked American woman.
