Top Seed Simona Halep and Fifth Seed Kiki Bertens Lose in French Open Upsets on Sunday
(October 4, 2020) The French Open began day 8 with a pair of fourth round upsets on Sunday, ending just a few minutes apart. No. 1 seed and 2018 champion Simona Halep of Romania lost to 19-year-old Pole Iga Swiatek 6-1, 6-2 on Court Philippe Chatrier. On Court Suzanne Lenglen a qualifier, world No. 159 Martina Trevisan a 26-year-old southpaw from Italy stunned No. 5 seed Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-4.
For Swiatek, the win avenges a loss to Halep at the same stage at the last Roland Garros, when Halep won in 45 minutes and lost only one game. The Polish teen has now reached her first major quarterfinal with the victory.
“I felt I was playing perfectly,” said the world no. 54 on court after the win. “Even I am surprised that I could do that.”

The win for Trevisan is her first-ever victory over a Top Ten player. It pits her against Swiatek in the quarterfinals. It’s the Italian’s first major quarterfinal in her French Open debut. Trevisan is the tenth ever qualifier to reach the final eight at the French Open.
Perfectly placed for a spot in the quarter-finals ?
