Singles Semis Set at USTA Crabel Capital Men’s 65 National Hard Court Championships

Singles Semis Set at USTA Crabel Capital Men’s 65 National Hard Court Championships

SAN DIEGO – (May 21, 2021) – Top-seeded Dan Waldman of Washington, D.C., and second-seeded Toby Crabel of Beverly Hills, Calif., advanced to the singles semifinals of the USTA Crabel Capital Men’s 65 National Hard Court Championships with straight-set quarterfinal victories on Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center.

Waldman continued his impressive play from the baseline as he defeated eighth-seeded Timothy Garcia of Santa Fe, N.M., 6-2, 6-4. Crabel got past fifth-seeded Sal Castillo of San Antonio, 6-4, 6-2. Both players have yet to drop a set in the tournament.

Saturday’s semifinals, which are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. (PDT), will feature Waldman against sixth-seeded Wendell Pierce of Oakland, Calif., and Crabel versus fourth-seeded Ross Persons of Houston. Both singles semifinal matches will be played concurrently.

Persons moved into the semifinals after defeating seventh-seeded Christopher Bennett of Marlton, N.J., 7-5, 6-3 in his quarterfinal match, while Pierce eliminated unseeded William Kellogg of La Jolla, Calif., 6-2. 6-2.

The Doubles Championship will be played on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. (PDT). Waldman and Persons, who are seeded No. 1, will meet the No. 2 seeds, Garcia and Bruce Nichols of Phoenix for the title.

The USTA Crabel Capital Men’s 65 National Hard Court Championships is offering close to $10,000 in prize money. The singles champion will be awarded $2,000 and the singles finalist will receive $1,500. USTA gold, silver and bronze balls will be awarded to first, second and third place finishers in all events.

COVID 19 protocols will be in effect for all participants and guests during the Championships.
