TOP-SEEDED DAN WALDMAN CAPTURES SINGLES TITLE AT USTA
CRABEL CAPITAL MEN’S 65 NATIONAL HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS

Waldman Defeats Crabel 6-3, 6-1 in Singles Final at Barnes Tennis Center

SAN DIEGO – (May 23, 2021) – Top-seed Dan Waldman of Washington, D.C., wrapped up an incredible week of tennis as he overpowered second-seeded Toby Crabel of Beverly Hills, Calif., 6-3, 6-1 to win the singles title at the USTA Crabel Capital Men’s 65 National Hard Court Championships.

Playing on a bright sunny day on Stadium Court at the Barnes Tennis Center, the 65-year-old Waldman scored a critical service break in the eighth game of the first set to take a 5-3 lead. He then easily served out the next game to win the set.

After exchanging service breaks to open the second set, Waldman took control and won five consecutive games to close out the match, which took one-hour and 26 minutes to complete.

“It’s was great. Toby is a really fine player. We had a lot of really good points. I never felt secure in the win until the last point. I was just trying to stay focused. It was nice to get a win under my belt,” Waldman said after being awarded his USTA gold ball for winning the national title.

“I didn’t give him much. I didn’t make too many errors. I made him win the points. When I had the opportunities, I was aggressive with my forehand. That was the game plan and it worked out,” Waldman added.

Earlier in the day, sixth-seeded Wendell Pierce of Oakland, Calif., won the USTA bronze ball when fourth-seeded Ross Persons of Houston retired due to an injury with Pierce leading 2-0 in the first set of the Third Place / Fourth Place match.
