WTA (November 17, 2021)GUADALAJARA, MEXICO – Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza captures her third WTA title of the season at the AKRON WTA Finals Guadalajara by defeating Anett Kontaveit, 6-3 7-5, in the championship match to lift the WTA Finals Billie Jean King Trophy. Muguruza becomes the first Spanish woman in WTA history to win the WTA Finals singles title, going one better than her compatriot Arantxa Sánchez Vicario who reached the final in 1993. “I’m very happy I proved to myself once again I can be the best, I can be the ‘maestra’, like how we say in Spanish,” said Muguruza in her post-match press conference. “This puts me in a very good position for next year, a good ranking. Good energy. It’s just the payoff for such a long year. My team and I worked hard. It pays off. Just shows us that we’re doing it the right way.” The Spaniard has improved her record in Mexico, posting a 14-2 record in the country including back-to-back titles at Monterrey in 2018 and 2019 and her 4-1 record this week in Guadalajara. |
