(January 4, 2022) No. 1 Novak Djokovic has received a medical exemption to play the Australian Open later this month. The nine-time Melbourne champion announced his exemption on his Instagram page on Tuesday.
Tennis Australia put out a statement in regard to the Serbian’s exemption:
The Victoria state government where Mel;bourne is situated has mandated that all players, staff and fans attending the Australian Open must be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 unless there is a reason why an exemption should be granted.
This ends months of speculation as to whether or not the 20-time major winner would play the Australian Open. Djokovic has not disclosed whether or not he’s been vaccinated for Covid-19.
The 34-year-old Djokovic will be seeking a record 21st major title when the Australian Open begins on January 17.
