PACIFIC COAST MEN’S DOUBLES TITLE AT LA JOLLA BEACH & TENNIS CLUB

Champions Defeat Teammates Stefan Leustian and Bryce Pereira 6-2, 6-4 in All-UCLA Final
LA JOLLA, Calif. – (March 6, 2022) – It was a championship day for the UCLA men’s tennis team as ninth-seeded Alexander Hoogmartens and Andrew Baird won an All-UCLA final over teammates Stefan Leustian and Bryce Pereira 6-2, 6-4 to win the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles title at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Playing on Court 1 under bright, sunny skies, Leustian and Pereira, who were seeded fourth, broke Hoogmarten’s serve in the opening game of the final. However, they could not capitalize on the service break.

Baird and Hoogmartens came back to break serve twice to build a 5-2 advantage and ultimately won the set as they broke Leustian in the eighth game.

In the second set, each team held serve through the first nine games, but Baird and Hoogmartens scored the decisive service break at 5-4 as they broke Pereira to close out the match which took 90 minutes.

“This is my first time here (La Jolla) and it’s the most fun I’ve had at a tournament in so many years. It means a lot. So many greats have won this tournament. It was a blast being here with my team and competing against very good opponents,” Baird said after winning the title.

“We’ve been on an upswing the last few weeks. We’ve been playing really well. We came here and wanted to do our best and get to know each other better as a team,” Baird added. “This was a great mid-season break. It’s a beautiful place. The tournament is run so well. The scheduling was amazing. It felt refreshing to be here.”

Earlier in the day, Hoogmartens and Baird eliminated the top-seeded collegiate team of Arthur Fery and Alexandre Rotsaert of Stanford University 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in semifinal action. Leustian and Pereira earned their place in the final with a 6-3, 7-5 semifinal victory over unseeded Victor Moreno and Nic Wiedenhorn of Nebraska University.

In the Consolation Final, which was also contested on Sunday afternoon, the independent team of Krzysztof Kwinta and Francis Sargeant defeated Lucas Magnaudet and Sean Hill of UC Berkeley 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Named one of the “Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the World” by Tennis Resorts Online, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s reputation as a top tennis destination started when it attracted its first major tournament – the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship in 1942. The tournament is one of the five-oldest tennis events in the world and the second oldest tennis event in the United States. First held in 1890 at The Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California, the event was created to promote the sale of real estate on the Monterey peninsula. The original concept pitted the best players from the East versus those from the West. This coast-to-coast rivalry was the inspiration for the Davis Cup. Past winners of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship include some on the greatest names in tennis, including Jack Kramer, Ted Schroeder, Bobby Riggs, Pancho Segura, Don Budge, Tony Trabert, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Arthur Ashe, Dennis Ralston and John McEnroe.

The Club will also be hosting the USTA National Hard Court Championships for Women’s 50-90 age groups and the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club Hard Court Tournament for Men’s 60-85 age groups from Monday, May 16, through Sunday, May 22.
