
(March 9, 2022) World No. 2 Novak Djokovic announced on his Twitter page that he would not be able to participate at both the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells of the Miami Open.
The BNP Paribas Open put out the following statement:
Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the BNP Paribas Open. As the next player in line to be seeded, Grigor Dimitrov will move into Djokovic’s space in the draw, and a Lucky Loser from qualifying will move into Dimitrov’s space in the draw once qualifying is complete.
Djokovic’s name had already been placed in the draw.
Djokovic who was the defending Australian Open champion, not vaccinated for Covid-19, was deported from Australia before the the Australian Open began part an 11-day ordeal in which part of it he was in a immigration detention center. Djokovic has only played one event in 2022.
Djokovic noted in February that he had no plans to get vaccinated for Covid.
