Dina McBride, Ros Nideffer and Tina Karwasky Win Singles Titles at USTA National Women’s Senior Hard Court Championship Titles

May 20, 2022 by Tennis Panorama News

LA JOLLA, Calif. – (May 20, 2022) – Dina McBride of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Ros Nideffer of San Tan Valley, Ariz., and Tina Karwasky of Glendale, Calif., were crowned singles champions in their respective age divisions of the USTA National Women’s Senior Hard Court Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

The top-seeded McBride won the 50 and over singles title with an entertaining 7-5, 6-4 win in 90 minutes over second-seeded Jenny Keller of La Jolla, Calif.

McBride came back from an early 2-0 deficit in the first set and got back on serve. Later, Keller served to stay in the opening set at 5-6. At 30-30 in the 12th game, McBride approached the net and hit a perfectly executed cross-court forehand volley winner to reach set point. Sensing her opportunity at 30-40, McBride again rushed the net and hit another winning volley to secure the set.

In the second set, McBride served for the match at 5-3, but Keller took advantage of two doubles faults to break serve to get back on serve at 4-5. However, McBride responded with a critical service break in the tenth game to close out the match.

“She’s (Keller) a great defender and a great competitor. She mixes it up and can volley well. She has an all-court game with a lot of variety,” McBride said after being presented her USTA gold ball for winning the national championship.

“I didn’t want to make the points too long. I wanted to put the pressure on,” McBride added. “If she was going to pass me, she was going to pass me. I wanted to make her earn the points and not make unforced errors.”

Nideffer, a former WTA touring professional, overcame a slow start and finished strong to successfully defend her 60 and over singles title as she came from behind for a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over second-seeded Vicki Buholz of Dallas in two-hours and three-minutes.

After dropping the opening set, the top-seeded Nideffer, a former two-time French Open doubles champion, rallied to even the match, breaking Buholz at love in the seventh game and ninth game of the second set.

In the third set, the 61-year-old Nideffer took command and built a 5-2 lead and served out the match at love to capture the 60 and over singles title for the second-straight year.

Karwasky, currently the No. 1 ranked player in the International Tennis Federation 70+ singles rankings, defeated fourth-seeded Gwenda Ward of Ocala, Fla., 6-0, 6-3 in one-hour and 10 minutes in the 70 and over singles final.

The 69-year-old Karwasky, who was seeded No. 1, dominated the 70s singles draw, dropping a total of five games on her way to winning the title.

Top-seeded Catherine Anderson of Del Mar, Calif., will meet second-seeded Charleen Hillebrand of Long Beach, Calif., in the 80 and over singles championship on Saturday at 9 a.m. Anderson and Hillebrand won their respective groups in Round Robin play to advance to the final.
