(June 4, 2022) World No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland won her second Roland Garros title on Saturday when she dismissed 18-year-old American Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3. The victory marked her 35th straight win. The longest streak on the women’s tour since 2000, when Venus Williams did it. Along with the 35 straight wins have been six straight titles.
Swiatek became No. 1 in the world back in March when Ashleigh Barty retired.
Swiatek is 42-3 on the year.
“Two years ago winning this was something amazing,” noted the 21-year-old Swiatek. “This time I feel I worked hard to get here. It was pretty tough, the pressure was big.”
“Thank you fans for the support, for coming, all the Polish flags I see there.”
Gauff, disappointed with her performance thanked her team during the trophy ceremony.
“I’m sorry I could not get this one today, but thank you guys for always supporting me,” she said. Gauff will move up in the rankings to a career-high 13th in the world.
Swiatek remains the only Polish player to ever win a major.
