Mertens Reclaims WTA World No.1 Doubles Ranking, Pegula Breaks Into Singles Top 10

June 6, 2022 by Tennis Panorama News

ST PETERSBURG, FL, USA – Elise Mertens has today reclaimed the WTA World No.1 doubles ranking following her third-round run at Roland Garros. The Belgian first achieved the top doubles ranking in May 2021, becoming the 45th woman in the history of the WTA to earn the No.1 spot and the second from Belgium, following Kim Clijsters in 2003.

Mertens has enjoyed a stellar season in 2022, winning the title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and reaching two further finals, at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open and the Miami Open presented by Itaú, all alongside partner Veronika Kudermetova. Mertens overtakes Katerina Siniakova as No.1, ending the Czech’s 28-week stay at the summit.

Another ranking milestone today sees the USA’s Jessica Pegula make her singles Top-10 debut.

Pegula, ranked now at No.8, reached her third career Grand Slam quarterfinal last week in Paris, while earlier this season finished runner-up at the Mutua Madrid Open and made the semifinals in Miami.

Pegula is the second player to make her Top-10 debut this season, following in the footsteps of her compatriot Danielle Collins in January.

Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit rises to No.2 in the world this week, and Ons Jabeur, of Tunisia, moves to No.4, which represent career-highs for both players. The USA’s Coco Gauff also achieves a new career-best ranking of No.13, following her run to the final at Roland Garros.
