Nadal Withdraws From Wimbledon; Women’s Final will Feature a Pair of First-time Major Finalists in Jabeur and Rybakina

July 7, 2022 by Tennis Panorama News

LONDON, ENGLAND – JULY 07: Rafael Nadal of Spain talks to the Media to announce his withdrawal from the tournament during a press conference on day eleven of The Championships Wimbledon 2022 at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on July 07, 2022 in London, England. (July 7, 2022) No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal announced on Thursday that he has withdrawing from Wimbledon due an abdominal tear. With the Spaniard’s withdrawal, unseeded Nick Kyrgios will advance to the Genlemen’s final on Sunday.

Ons Jabeur of Tunisia and Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan will face off for the women’s title on Saturday. Both women have reached a major tournament finals for the first time.

Jabeur defeated good friend Tatjana Maria of Germany 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 while Rybakina overpowered 2019 champion Simona Halep of Romania 6-3, 6-3.

With the win,No. 3 seed Jabeur became the first African woman and the first Arab woman to be in a major final in the Open Era.

“I want to go bigger, inspire many more generations,” said the 27-year-old. “Tunisia is connected to the Arab world, is connected to the African continent. … I want to see more players from my country, from the Middle East, from Africa.”

Rybakina at 23, who will also be a first-time major finalist plaining just out-powered Halp in her semifinal. She is the current ace leader on the WTA Tour.

Quotes from Nadal’s news conference;

“I had some issues in abdominals since a week, but more or less we were able to control it. But yesterday was the worst day. Honestly, during the week I did tests to see how things evolve.”

“Yesterday in the game that I was serving 3-1 to 3-2 (first set), I think was the moment that I start to feel the things were going worse. Then serving, if I was not wrong, 4-3 the thing starts to be much worse.

“It’s obvious that yesterday after the match this very small thing that I had days ago, increased to a bigger thing.”

“I made my decision because I believe that I can’t win two matches under these circumstances. I can’t serve. It’s not only that I can’t serve at the right speed, it’s that I can’t do the normal movement to serve..

“For respect to myself in some way, I don’t want to go out there, not be competitive enough to play at the level that I need to play to achieve my goal, and with a big chance to make things much worse.”

“I never thought about the calendar Slam. I thought about my daily happiness and my daily work. Just play for the things that I really feel like,”
