
Great Britain’s Ben Bartram became the first player to ever win a junior wheelchair match at a Grand Slam today at the US Open. Bartram, 17, the top seed in the boys’ wheelchair singles draw, defeated Ivar van Rijt, 15, of the Netherlands, 6-1, 6-2.
This year the US Open became the first major to feature a junior wheelchair division as part of an historic expansion of the US Open Wheelchair Championships that also included expanding the men’s and women’s fields to 16 players.
