(July 10, 2023) Just a year ago, American Christopher Eubanks was ranked 163 in the world, but on Monday, the 27-year-old former Georgia Tech standout won the biggest match of his life to move into the quarterfinals of Wimbledon and moved his live ranking up to a career high No 31. The big serving Atlanta native stopped No. 5 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 3-6, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in this his first main draw at The Championships.
“It’s surreal. I can’t really describe it,” said Eubanks.
“I just think the entire experience, all together, has just been a whirlwind. It’s been something that you dream about,” Eubanks said. “I didn’t really know if that dream would actually come true. I’m sitting here in it now, so it’s pretty cool.“
“I still could have the confidence to say: ‘I’m a server,” said the American. “I hit serving targets for these moments right here, and let’s just try to do what I know how to do.’”
The past few years have been a journey for Eubanks, playing the challenger circuit between tour level event just to get enough ranking points to move into the qualifying events of majors and other top level tournaments.
Eubanks, who confessed his issues with playing on grass, calling it “the stupidest surface,”said that friend, World Team Tennis teammate and Tennis Hall of Famer Kim Clijsters gave him advice on playing on the surface, as well as encouragement.
“Those words will never come out of my mouth for the rest of my career. The grass and I, we’ve had a very strenuous, I would say, relationship over the years,” Eubanks said.
Eubanks came into Wimbledon, winning his first ever main level ATP tournament in Mallorca, a grass tournament.
The next test for the American will be world No. 3 Daniil Medvedev, 2021 US Open champion, for a place in the semifinals.
“I know I need to be at my 100% and absolute best physically, tennis-wise, and mentally to try to beat him,” said Medvedev.
