(July 15, 2023) Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic became the first unseeded player to win the women’s singles title at Wimbledon since 1963, when she defeated No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-4.
In 1963 a 19-year-old Billie Jean King won The Championships as an unseeded player.
It’s the 24-year-old Czech’s first major title, in her second major final. This was Jabeur’s third major final.
Jabeur started off the match breaking Vondrousova for a 2-0 lead and took a 4-2 lead. But the Czech focused on the Tunisian’s backhand and won the next four games, 16 0f the last 18 points to claim the first set 6-4.
Set two saw Jabeur grab a 3-1 lead only to surrender the break advantage in the very next game. Vondrousova won 5 out of the last 8 games to clinch the title.
The victory moves the southpaw’s ranking from No. 42 to the Top Ten.
