(February 7, 2026) TATABÁNYA, Hungary – Ethan Quinn arrived on the Davis Cup stage with a dramatic victory over top-ranked Hungarian Fabian Marozsan, saving four match points in a third-set tiebreak to give the U.S. a commanding 2-0 lead over the Hungarians in front of their home crowd and on their chosen surface on Day 1 of this First Round Qualifier.
Quinn, making his Davis Cup debut as a 21-year-old ranked No. 68, defeated the 46th-ranked veteran Marozsan, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(11), in a sensational second singles match played on the indoor clay court inside the Tatabányai Multifunkcionális Sportcsarnok. Tommy Paul polished off Zsombor Piros, 7-6(3), 6-3, earlier in the afternoon, and the U.S. is now one match win away from advancing to the second round of 2026 Davis Cup Qualifying.
“I felt like it was pretty high-level,” Paul said. “Obviously with Davis Cup matches there’s a lot of nerves in the beginning of the match. I think you could see that on both sides, and I thought he loosened into the match very well. I though he played great tennis. It was clear what his gameplan was and I thought he did a pretty good job executing it. I tried to do my best to not let him do it, and I think as the match kind of went on and we got into those pressure points, I thought I did a little bit better than he did and I thought that was the difference in the match. I think like I said overall he did play a pretty great match, and going into tomorrow, I think, hopefully Ethan can get it done today, but he’s got to be well-prepared or that match tomorrow. ‘
The best-of-five-match tie continues on Sunday, beginning with the doubles that pits 2026 Australian Open doubles champion Christian Harrison and former doubles world No. 1 Austin Krajicek against Marozsan and Piros. Play begins at 11 a.m. local time, 5 a.m. ET, and airs on Tennis Channel in the U.S.
The tie is scheduled to conclude with the reverse singles matches — Paul against Marozsan and Quinn against Piros — but Sunday’s schedule could be amended if the U.S. clinches victory in the third or fourth match. Captains may make substitutions to Sunday’s lineups up to one hour prior to match time for the doubles and after the previous match for the singles.
The winner of USA-Hungary advances to the Second Round of Qualifying in late September. vs. the winner of Czechia and Sweden. The Czechs are also up 2-0 in their tie.
