(May 26, 2025) No. 9 seed Emma Navarro of the United States lost her first round match at the French Open when she was dominated by world No. 68 Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain 6-0, 6-1in 57 minutes on Court Phillipe Chatrier on Monday.
The Spaniard came within two points of a double bagel, a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Navarro reached the fourth round in Paris last year.
“I didn’t expect the result but I always try to play my best, and I think everything is possible,” Bouzas Maneiro said. “I feel good playing on clay, and winning here at Roland Garros is so special to me.”
She will next face American Robin Montgomery in the second round.
“Right now, I feel really happy with how I played today, with how I handled the pressure,” Bouzas Maneiro said in her on-court interview. “I wanted to do my best, and I think I did it.”
“It’s funny because my team just told me, ‘Is it possible to win a match in two sets?’ because my last matches were all three sets … and I was like, ‘I’ll try,'” she said.
“So this one is for you guys, one hour!”
