(June 21, 2026) Twenty-three time major champion will play in ladies’ singles at this year’s Championships at Wimbledon after entering the main draw as a wild card.
Wimbledon officially announced in a release on Sunday: “Serena Williams (USA) receives the final ladies’ singles wild card,” just 8 days before the tournament begins.
The 44-year-old Williams came back on the tour after an almost four year absence just three weeks ago to play doubles with top ten player Victoria Mboko.
Williams will also play the ladies’ doubles alongside sister Venus, also as a wild card.
No player has ever won the ladies’ singles as a wild card, but two have in the ladies’ doubles – Serena and Venus themselves, in 2000 and 2002.
Williams has spoken about wanting her two daughters, Olympia and Adira, to see her play.
Williams has reached the Wimbledon singles final 11 times, wining the title seven times.
The last time the American played at Wimbledon was in 2022 when she lost to No. 115 Harmony Tan in the first round after Williams was forced to retire due to injury. Her last singles match came in the third round of the U.S. Open that same year losing to Australian to Ajla Tomljanovic.
At the moment, Williams has no singles ranking, which could put her in a spot where she is playing the top seeds as early as the first round. The draws will be made on Friday.
