(July 13, 2024) No. 31 Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic defeated No, 7 Jasmine Paolini of Italy 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 on Saturday to win the women’s title at Wimbledon. It was her first Wimbledon singles final and title. The Czech won the French Open in 2021 and this Wimbledon crown is her second major title.
Krejcikova has won 10 major doubles titles and has a career doubles Grand Slam.
“It’s the best day of my tennis career and the best day of my life,” the Czech said on court.
“Nobody is gonna believe I won Wimbledon. I still cannot believe it,” said Krejcikova.
“She told me to go and win a Slam. I never dreamt I’d win the same title.” Krejcikova said of the late Jana Novotna, former top player Wimbledon winner.
Krejcikova wrote to Novotna who was one of her idols and left it at her home. The 1998 Wimbledon winner told Krejcikova that she had talent and to stick to playing tennis. Novotna became a mentor to her until she passed in 2017.
“Before she passed away,” Krejcikova said, “she told me to go and win a Slam.”
” I miss Jana a lot. It was just very, very emotional. … I think she would be proud.”
Krejcikova is the fifth Czech player to win the women’s title at Wimbledon in the Open Era after her one-time mentor Jana Novotna, Martina Navratilova, Petra Kvitova and last year’s champion Marketa Vondrousova.
Paolini: “The last two months have been crazy for me. Today I’m a little bit sad. I’ll try to keep smiling. I have to remember that today is still a good day.”

Krejcikova ranked at No. 32 in the world, is the second-lowest-ranked player to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title since the WTA rankings began in 1975.
“It’s unbelievable,” Krejcikova said, looking down at the gleaming Venus Rosewater Dish in her hands. “I’m standing here. I’m a Wimbledon winner.”
