(April 9, 2026) USTA – Eighteen-year-old world No. 16 Iva Jovic will lead off the USA’s Billie Jean King Cup Qualifying tie vs. Belgium on Friday with a matchup against 21-year-old Hanne Vandewinkel (No. 94) on the indoor red clay in Ostend, Belgium. It will mark the BJK Cup debut for the Southern Californian Jovic, who is the youngest player ranked in the Top 20.

McCartney Kessler (No. 48), a member of the Finalist team last year for the U.S., will then make her BJK Cup playing debut against top Belgian Elise Mertens (No. 20).

Jovic and Vandewinkel have no prior head-to-head. Kessler is 2-0 vs. Mertens, with both wins coming on hard courts (Hobart, Beijing) last year.

Caty McNally and Nicole Melichar-Martinez are tabbed for the doubles match vs. Greet Minnen and Magali Kempen. McNally won the doubles title at the WTA 500 in Charleston, S.C., last week, and Melichar-Martinez reached the Indian Wells semifinals this year. Captains may make substitutions to their doubles nominations one hour prior to match time. Mertens, notably, is the world doubles No. 1.

Captain Lindsay Davenport talked about the transition from player to coach:

“It’s one of the greatest honors to represent your country, but especially in
this sport where for about 49 weeks of the year it’s an individual sport, and there’s only a couple opportunities to really be on a team. I think that these ladies up here relish that, the opportunity to work together, to have group dinners, group practices, group events, and to have people that are actively behind you, wanting you to do well, wanting you have a good practice, cheering you on. We’ve had a great week here so far. This has always been one of my favorite events. I first
played it at 17, and [I’m] still involved now at my old age, so I’ve seen a lot of different decades of it and [I’m] still so honored to be around this great event every year.”

(August 24, 2025) FLUSHING, NY – Caty McNally won her first round match on Sunday, defeating No. 21 Jil Teichmann, 6-2, 6-2. McNally is making a comeback of sorts, recovering from various injuries over the last two years. Tennis Panorama News did a quick hit with her after her win.

Caty McNally: Thank you.

Tennis Panorama News: How does it feel coming back to the U.S. Open again?

CN: Yeah, it’s super special to be back here, and it’s been a while since I’ve just been here competing, so it’s just special to feel the atmosphere here and to experience, you know, being an American, playing in your home slam, it’s really special and there’s just, you know, there’s just a great energy, a great vibe around the grounds. And, yeah, I really enjoyed it.

TPN: Coming back for you, making your way back from a little bit of an injury, you won Newport. Can you talk about that?

CN: Yeah, after Wimbledon, I had been signed up for Newport and I thought it was a great opportunity to just get a little bit more time on the grass. My brother got married before Wimbledon, so it cut out two weeks of my grass court season, which, for me is not usually ideal, but it is what it is, so Newport being on the calendar ended up working out great, and, yeah, I had a great week there and carried that over into Evansville, which is another ITF and won that. So just great for me to get more matches under my belt and anytime I can compete for trophies on a Sunday, it’s amazing.

TPN: Do you have any goals for the rest of the year?

CN: For me, yeah, I’m actually going to Asia for the first time, so I’m just really excited to go over there. Hopefully I can play a lot of matches. But for me, I’ve never had the opportunity to go over there every time I’ve wanted to I’ve either been injured or it’s just, it’s not worked out. It’s not worked out. So I’m just excited to go over there and to experience so many new things and, yeah, hopefully I can play some good tennis, but for now, I just enjoy being here.

TPN: I see you with Viuori now. Can you talk about that? Because the other players are changing clothiers

CN: Yeah, I’ve been I mean, I was with Adidas for a long time and obviously coming off the injury. Yeah, a new brand, and I love them so much. I think over the last couple of years, they’ve really expanded and Yeah, I mean, I just love their stuff. And yeah, I’ excited to wear it.
