(September 6, 2026) FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – Frances Tiafoe became the third man to reach the quarterfinals at the US Open this year as he defeated the 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev 7-6(1), 6-4, 7-6(6) in Louis Armstrong Stadium on Sunday afternoon. This is his fourth time reaching the final 8 at the US Open.
The 11th seed joins two other American men, Alex Michelsen and Ben Shelton in the elite 8 at the US Open. Five American men made it to the fourth round this year, the most in more than 20 years.
“We play so much outside of the States obviously, a lot of time in Europe,” Tiafoe said Sunday. “This sport’s so international, so to be able to play in front of friends, family, loved ones, is amazing. They don’t get to see you much, so you want to put on a show.”
“What a match,” Tiafoe said. “Daniil has been so good and he has beaten me so many times. This is the first time I have beaten him in a regular match, so I am super pumped up about it.”
“Hell of a match. Really good match. A lot of back-and-forth, obviously. A lot of breaks today, good returning from guys.
“Yeah, I mean, I played well today. I played well when it counted. Yeah, I came up with some crazy stuff, but it had to be that good against such a quality player in Daniil.
“Yeah, I knew what I had to do, and it’s all about execution. Happy I was able to do it today.”
The 11th-seeded Tiafoe saved a set point in the third-set tiebreak. The American keeps his perfect record in Louis Armstrong Stadium, now 10-0.

“It has been amazing playing on this court, the energy man,” Tiafoe said after recording his sixth Top-10 win at a major. “It is like the people’s court. I am loving the energy for sure.”

Tiafoe will be playing fellow American, unseeded 22-year-old Alex Michelson, who upset No. 27 Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6(6), 6-4, 6-4 on the Grandstand.
“I’m a little bit surprised just because I feel like my run-up form wasn’t super good coming into this tournament, ” the 22-year -old American said. “And I say no, because I have been working my a## off for, I don’t know how many years, playing this sport.
“I’m a little bit surprised that it came like this, but at the same time, I always had a feeling it would come.”
“We’ve (American men) been working really hard to get to this point and I’m really happy but not super surprised because of all the work I put in my whole life,” Michelsen said after reaching his first major tournament quarterfinal.
On Tiafoe: “I think I probably first watched him when he played Fed here on Ashe in 2017. I kind of remember watching that from home. I was probably like 12, 13 years old, he was playing. So that was cool.
“Yeah, I played him twice. I’m 0-2. Going to have to change something a little bit. It’s also been a long time since I have played him. I feel like I’ve improved.
“He’s also an unbelievable guy and a very good friend of mine. I think it’s going to be an absolute blast. Hopefully we’ll play on Ashe, and I think that will be a one-of-a-kind experience.”
Tiafoe on Michelsen: “Well, I mean, it’s amazing that he’s in the quarterfinals at 13, you know what I mean? (Laughter.) You know what I’m saying?
“No, but I mean, I saw him, he had longer hair before, balding a bit. I see him in challengers and he was winning a bunch with Lotto and stuff. I had no idea who this kid was. Man, this guy is killing it. I could see his name, winning and winning.
“That was kind of my first impression with him, but I seen him here. I remember I played Learner a bunch of years ago here, and he hit a backhand return. He’s, like, Oh, that’s Djokovic. I’m, like, Who is this kid?
“He’s funny, man. He’s really funny. I’m excited to play him. Super happy for him.”
“I mean, Alex is a hell of a player. He’s young. He’s going to juiced up. We’ve played a few times. We have a good relationship. We’re always laughing and joking.
“I’m excited to face him. He’s going to be excited to face me. Let the best man win.”
Ben Shelton, the 8th seed, will be taking on defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Shelton made easy work of Stefanos Tsitsipas, beating him 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, while Alcaraz beat American Tommy Paul in straight sets as well.
Shelton and Alcaraz will be playing a blockbuster quarterfinal on Tuesday.
“Yeah, we practiced together before the tournament,” said Shelton. “I’ve been watching his matches. I think he’s playing extremely high level.
“To me, he looks very normal — his normal, I mean — which is impressive after not playing for five months. I think it will be a great match. I’m excited for the battle. Never played him here in New York, and obviously in the position that I want to be in.”
Shelton last played the Spaniard at Roland Garros last year. “I thought I played a good match in Paris, but I think I’m serving better, returning much better. I think my shot tolerance from the baseline, overall quality from the baseline, and my movement have improved. I think that, you know, it’s definitely going to be a different match playing here.
“Yeah, I think those are the areas that have probably changed the most for me.”
Alcaraz on Shelton: “Really powerful player. I think he use the crowd, the people behind him, especially when he’s playing here at home.”
