(September 7, 2026) FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – There’s a famous saying from the late baseball Hall of Famer, Yogi Berra: “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” On Saturday, Qingwen Zheng came back from 0-5 down in the third set in her third-round match against No. 22 Madison Keys and won seven straight games for the win. On Monday, history repeated itself for the qualifier from China, the 2024 Olympic gold medalist. She fell to 0-5 against Iga Swiatek, the 8th seed, and won the next seven straight games, saving set points along the way. She went on to win the match in a stunning upset, 7-5, 6-4.
“I been expecting, like, really tough match today, and also, I’m happy to won in two sets. It’s really difficult to do that against Iga, because she’s a wonderful player,” said Zheng.
“I felt like I started missing too many shots, she started playing, and I let her back into the match,” Swiatek said about Zheng’s comeback.
“But honestly, my focus was the same as always. I wanted to play the same as always. Just started to miss too much, wanted to adjust it, but nothing kind of worked at that point. I knew I’m going to have, you know, another chance, and I wanted to use it, but I missed them all.”
“Today, I wouldn’t say it had anything to do with mentality. It was more that I started making mistakes, you know, from easy balls and Qinwen stopped doing mistakes. She played the balls better.”
“It’s just one match. Like, I’ll try to play the same way as usual, said the Pole.
“You can lose a set from any score, so nothing special about that. Just that’s what happened and that’s it.”
“I would say I start the match really slow,” said Zheng. “That’s why she’s able to lead 5-0. After that, I start to play more freely, let’s say, because I think I need to try to find my rhythm at least for the second set.
“But somehow, I felt really comfortable on court, and in one moment I also lose the score, because I’m so focused to playing every single point.
“I think that’s the key for me to come back. I didn’t expect that today, but somehow it’s just happening again,” she said, smiling.

Swiatek could not capitalize on two set points while serving at 5-1 and another with a 5-3 lead.
“Well, I was just mishitting the balls,” Swiatek said. “So didn’t feel like I had space to feel it better. I don’t know.
“Well, I framed a lot. I didn’t hit the ball in the right place. It’s not so easy to adjust, like, the basic things in the game if they’re not working, you know. Just tried to focus on having, like, smooth rhythm and everything, but also, you know, I didn’t have good timing. I wasn’t hitting the ball right.
“It’s tough to get over that when it happens. And maybe I could have played more safe or something, but I also didn’t feel like I had space with Qinwen to do that. If I would be more solid than her, I would win this game, but I wasn’t solid and I was missing too much.
“Yeah, I had, like, some ideas of what to do with it, like some worked on the previous match, but it’s not going to work every time.”
Zheng will take on the winner of the Naomi Osaka vs. Elena Rybakina match for a place in the final four.
The Olympic gold medalist reached the draw through the qualifying tournament. Injuries to her elbow saw her ranking drop into the 160’s.
Zheng talked about how hard it was to deal with her drop in ranking due to injury.
“Yeah, psychologically, it is very difficult to accept. I mean, I used to be top 10, Olympic champion. I play in the big stadiums since the beginning.
“Right now, you know, my ranking drop so much after injury, I couldn’t performance well the last three, four months. I know people has lot of doubt about me, and it’s just really hard for me.
“I just needs to keep positive every single day, telling myself, Just keep working, and let’s see when the result gonna happen.
“It is really, really tough process. I suffered a lot, and I have been through a lot of pain every single losses I have. But I think at the end, sport, you just needs to stay humble and keep fighting, because once you lost that, the result really shows everything.
“I’m just really happy to be back again. I mean, if that’s what God give to me, all the losses before, I’m sure that he will give me something back, no?”
As for her next opponent, she’ll be facing Elena Rybakina who dominated Naomi Oska 6-1, 6-4.
“I think both, they are really tough opponen,” Zheng said. “They had Grand Slam winner before. Doesn’t matter who I play against, I just gonna give my 100%.
“I think it’s gonna be a tough fight over there, as well. You know, both have big stroke, big serve. It’s not going to be easy match.
“I mean, doesn’t matter who I play. I just can make sure on my side I will try to play my tennis and trying to keep fighting the same and with good energy there.”
“Of course Rybakina, she’s leading on the aces. Her serve is biggest weapon of her and it’s not easy. And she play very flat ball also. This can makes me not so comfortable.
“But, I think both has their good stuff, and both also has their weakness, like everybody here. So we just play the game, and let’s see what can happen there.”
The last qualifier to win a major was Emma Raducanu of Great Britain, who won in 2021.
