(August 30, 2026) FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – Third-seeded Jessica Pegula won her first-round match at the US Open 6-3, 6-2 over Elena-Gabriela Ruse at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday.
“I thought today I played a really clean match, noted the American. “I felt really nervous before I went out there, but I know my coaches were, like, You didn’t really look that nervous. We thought you played great.
“That’s always comforting to know that I was able to get through it somewhat straightforward today, but she’s a good player, so I think it was a little bit tougher maybe than the score probably seemed.”
A number of women in the draw have a chance at taking the No. 1 ranking awat from Aryna Sabalenka, Pegula is one of them.
“I think I’d have to win this tournament in order to be No. 1, but I think that just shows the level of women’s tennis right now and how well a lot of the top players are playing. But it’s definitely extra motivation, and I think it’s something that would be amazing, but again, it’s very, very, very, very far away.”

No. 19 seed Jasmine Paolini of Italy needed three sets to advance over Slovenia’s Veronika Erjavec 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The first big upset of the 2026 US Open, came from Kamilla Rakhimova defeating two-time major singles champion and No. 27 seed Barbora Krejcikova
7-6 (4), 6-2 in 1 hour and 53 minutes to reach the second round. She needed seven match points to close it.
“It’s funny. I watched the highlights of her previous match (against Taylor Townsend at last year’s US Open), and she saved eight match points and won,” Rakhimova said in her on-court interview. “I was trying not to think about it, and I’m glad that I managed my emotions and closed the match in my favor.”

Elina Svitolina had no problems with Solana Sierra of Argentina. The Ukrainian won 6-1, 6-2.
