SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES
– Sunday’s championship match marked the first career meeting between the two 2026 US Clay finalists, Tommy Paul and Roman Andres Burruchaga.
– Paul saved three match points to win his first US Clay title at the site of his first-ever ATP Tour match win in 2016.
– He became the fifth consecutive American player to win the US Clay title, following Reilly Opelka (2022), Frances Tiafoe (2023), Ben Shelton (2024), and Jenson Brooksby (2025).
– Paul, 28, is the oldest US Clay champion since Juan Monaco, 32, won the title in 2016.
– The win marks his 5th ATP title in nine finals, and first on clay. This was also Paul’s second ATP final of the year, having finished runner-up earlier this season in Delray Beach.
– Paul joins Tiafoe as the only two active American ATP players to win titles on clay, grass, and hard courts.
– He is now the leader in 2026 match wins among American players, with a 19-7 record on the year.
– With his title win, Paul re-enters the top 20 for the first time since last October, rising to No. 18 in next week’s ATP rankings.
– Burruchaga, the 2026 US Clay finalist, is projected to rise to a new career-high ATP ranking of No. 61. He cracked the top 100 for the first time in February and started the week ranked No 77.
– Leading up to the final, the 24-year-old Argentine recorded his biggest career wins to date, with a pair of notable victories over No. 3 seed Learner Tien and No. 5 seed Brandon Nakashima.
– Burruchaga, 24, came into Houston in title-winning form, having claimed his fourth ATP Challenger title last week in Sao Paolo and riding a nine-match win streak coming into Sunday’s final.
– Burruchaga’s father, Jorge, is an Argentine football legend who scored the country’s game-winning goal in the 1986 World Cup final.
DOUBLES MAIN DRAW NOTES
– Ben Shelton and partner Andres Andrade, a wildcard team entry, won their first ATP doubles title on Sunday, defeating the top-seeded Brazilian team of Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos.
– Shelton and Andrade were former collegiate teammates who helped lead the Florida Gators to the program’s first NCAA team title in 2021.
– They are now 5-1 as a team, which includes a quarterfinals finish in 2024 and title in 2026.
– Shelton becomes the third player this century to win US Clay singles and doubles titles, joining Mardy Fish (2004, 2006) and Andy Roddick. He’s also the first American doubles champion in Houston since Bob and Mike Bryan won in 2016.
– Andrade is the first Ecuadorian US Clay doubles champion in 40 years, since Andres Gomez won the title in 1986. He’s also only the fifth Ecuadorian man to win an ATP doubles title in Open Era history.
– Shelton’s father and coach, Bryan, was a River Oaks singles champion himself, winning the 1992 River Oaks International.
– Though Andrade represents Ecuador, he has lived in the U.S. for the last 20 years and his mother is a Houston resident.
