On Wednesday Townsend defeated Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 7-5, 6-2 to reach the third round. At the net for the handshake, Ostapenko said some words to Townsend which began a heated exchange.

Townsend held a post-match news conference after her doubles win on Thursday late afternoon, discussing the incident and her upcoming match.
