(August 26, 2025) FLUSHING, NY – The Wimbledon winners and former US Open champions had easy victories during the day session in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday, day three of the US Open. The night session featured 2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff, who struggled to win in three sets.
Second seed Iga Swiatek of Poland defeated Emiliana Arango of Colombia 6-1, 6-2 in 60 minutes, while Italian Jannick Sinner, the top seed, won in 99 minutes 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 over Vit Kopriva of the Czechia.
Gauff defeated Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5 in a little less than three hours. He opponent is known for being the person who beat Serena Williams in her last match.
“Well, first matches are always a bit different, so I’m happy that I had some time to just get used to the conditions and the surface, because for sure it’s different than the practice courts,” noted Swiatek.
“I think it was just a solid match, and so I’m happy that I can play another round here. “
Sinner coming out of a Cincinnati Open final where he retired with an injury said that he’s fit. “I feel in a good shape physically. Has been some good practice days, especially last couple. Yeah, I feel physically in a good spot.
“Also good first-round match, so I’m very happy. Let’s see what’s coming.”
“It wasn’t the best,” Gauff said, “but I’m happy to get through.”
Gauff recently hired Aryna Sabalenka’s former serve coach.
“I’m so used to these long battles,” she said.
“But yeah, the practice week was tough because I was spending a lot of time on court literally serving until, like, my shoulder was hurting. Yeah, it’s just tough.
“I feel like it’s in the right direction, and I think for me it’s trying not to go back to old habits in those tighter moments, and I think I did that today, especially in the third set.
“Yeah, I know when I did this, I was not going to, like, maybe serve the best, but I don’t know. I just felt like I don’t want to waste any more time. If I could have worked with Gavin earlier, I would have, but obviously he was on the team of another player. So I was just, like, I have no chance.
“Then he magically became available. Yeah, I knew I had to make a quick decision because I knew he would be pretty sought out after. Yeah, this was what it was. I think hopefully this time next year I’ll be serving much better. “
