(September 7, 2024) FLUSHING, NY – No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus won her first US Open titles on Saturday afternoon when she defeated No. 6 Jessica Pegula of the United States 7-5, 7-5.
It was the 30-year-old Pegula’s first-ever major final.
It was a very back-and-forth first set. Pegula stuck first by breaking the powerful serve of Sabalenka to go up 2-1. Sabalenka won the next four games to make it 5-2. Pegula bounced back with three straight games of her own to make it 5-5. The 26-year-old Sabalenka battled to hold for 6-5. In the twelfth game Pegula fought off four set points but could not defend a fifth, Sabalenka breoke to capture the firsat set 7-5.
The Belarusian went up a quick break and took a 3-0 lead, but Pegula still kept fighting, getting ablls back, extending rallies, earning two breaks and winning five straight games for a 5-3 lead. Sabalenka held for 4-5. Pegula failed to serve out the set and the set was even at 5-5. Sabalenka picked up her power game and held to take a 6-5 lead. Sabalenka broke serve to end the match. 7-5, 7-5.

“It was very difficult match,” said Sabalenka. “She played really incredible tennis. Honestly, after me leading 3-Love I didn’t really expect her to come back with such a high level. I’m really glad that I was able to hold my serve in that 5-3 down. Then to broke her back, it gave me so much belief that I can close this match in two sets.
“So very difficult match, and super happy with the win.”
“Super-tough match today,” Pegula said to media. “Obviously I would love to be in a third set right now, but I guess relatively speaking, happy that I was able to at least get my chances to win a set, considering I was down in the first and in the second.
“So was able to find some good tennis. Just wasn’t quite able to sustain it. Yeah, congrats to her. I think she played some big tennis in some big moments.”
“I’m just annoyed I lost right now.” Pegula said. “Everyone is like, Congrats, amazing tournament. I’m like, Eh, whatever. (Laughter.)
“I think maybe once I decompress a little bit, I’m sure I will be a little bit more appreciative and see all of that. At some point. I should probably do that at some point.
“Yeah, it’s been kind of a crazy couple of days, so hopefully I’ll get some time after this to kind of just relax and just, you know, look back at what I’ve been able to do the last month.”
This was the fourth time during the Open Era that the second seed and sixth seed faced each other in a Women’s Singles Grand Slam final all of which were at the US Open (Margaret Court vs Nancy Richey 1969, Monica Seles vs Martina Navratilova 1991, Aryna Sabalenka vs Coco Gauff 2023).
With winning the Australian Open in January, Sabalenka has become the 5th player during Open Era to win both Women’s Singles hardcourt Grand Slams titles during the same season after Monica Seles (1991,92), Steffi Graf (1988,89), Angelique Kerber (2016) and Martina Hingis (1997). Sabalenka is the second oldest player during the Open Era to win both hard-court Women’s Singles majors during the same season after Angelique Kerber.
Despite the loss, Pegula takes confidence away with her from the tournament.
“If I can’t take confidence from this, there’s got to be something wrong,” she said.
“So, I mean, I think I’ve taken confidence from winning a 250, from winning a 1000, from being able to win another 1000. Multiple ones now. Then to be able to be a Grand Slam finalist, I think that was kind of the last thing for me, right, was I made a lot of quarterfinals but can I make a semi, can I be a contender to actually win a Grand Slam.
“I mean, looking back, I’ve lost again to a really good player. I lost to girls that pretty much won the tournament every time. I know my level was right there. And I think maybe I handled the moment a little bit better this year, like I said before, with just having maybe a different perspective of I had a rough start to the year and I didn’t really expect to be doing this well in the hard court swing, and I was able to kind of flip that script.
“So I think when I came into here, it was almost less pressure kind of in a way, because I was just happy I was in another quarterfinal. My slam record this year was not great. So I think maybe that perspective maybe helped me through that moment, and then I was able to obviously have a great match in the semi, come from behind there, and put myself in a chance to win a Grand Slam.
“I think for sure I will take a lot of confidence from this in maybe like a hour or two, because like I said, I’m kind of annoyed. Not even annoyed losing the tournament. I think it’s more just I was looking at it at, like, I just wanted to win the match. Now there is, like, things that are just in my head that I feel I should have done better and stuff like that. But like I said, I think that will pass in a little bit.”
“Would definitely say that this is, like, it was the best moment, one of the best moments,” Sabalenka said to media.
“Like, so many things was going through my mind. The first one was that, all those tough losses in the past, and I was just, like, so proud of myself and proud of my team that no matter what, we were able to come back stronger and come back with the better tennis.
“And now finally we are having this beautiful trophy. Yeah, I mean, I don’t know. I don’t know how to describe that feeling. You’re crying, you’re laughing, you’re just, you know, you feel all these emotions at the same time. That’s the best feeling. I really wish everyone could or can experience that.”
“I faced a lot of challenges on and off the court. The difficult one was also, like, being injured and not able to play Wimbledon. It was new experience for me.
“It’s also very special place here, the US Open. I also had a lot of tough losses in the past. I was always hoping that one day I’ll be able to hold this beautiful trophy. It’s been always my dream.
“That’s why it’s very special, because no matter what, every time I was coming back stronger, and I was learning, I never gave up on this dream, and yeah, you know, it’s means a lot.”
